Job Summary


Under general supervision of the Small Animal Surgery and OR Supervisor, responsible for ensuring patient care standards for hospitalized patients, aseptic preparation of patients for various surgical procedures, operating room set up, circulation, break down and providing post-surgical recovery of patients. Additional, responsibilities include student instruction as well as client communication and education, including patient admissions and discharges. Work cooperatively with others to foster strong team commitments towards achieving Surgery services objectives. RECRUITMENT PERIOD ONE MONTH: Applicants will be screened after two weeks; and then on a weekly basis. The position can be filled prior to the apply by date. Must possess a valid Veterinary Assistant Controlled Substance Permit (VACSP) within 3 months of date of hire.Experience working in a veterinary hospital performing physical examinations and safe handling of multiple species.Experience calculating drug dosages and administering medications intravenously, subcutaneously, intramuscular or orally. Experience preparing patients for surgical procedures using aseptic technique. Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills to engage effectively with diverse students, staff, clinicians, and clients. Knowledge of normal canine and feline parameters and experience obtaining patient vitalsProficiency in collection of blood and urine samples, placement and maintenance of IV cathetersPreferred Qualifications
Current California Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) License or Veterinary Assistant Controlled Substance Permit (VACSP) Experience setting up, operating and troubleshooting various specialized surgical equipment including but not limited to cautery, fluoroscopy and laparoscopic towers. Experience positioning and preparing patients for various surgical procedures including but not limited to Soft Tissue Surgery, Neurosurgery, and Orthopedic Surgery. Experience with surgical asepsis and how it relates to direct contamination of patients, instruments and sterile supplies.

This position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy. Work under regular exposure to zoonotic diseases, anesthesia, cleaning chemicals and exposure to radioactive patients. Required to wear protective clothing for extended periods of time including: gown, coveralls, gloves, masks, face shields, goggles, sleeves and head covers. Requires working with or around areas with sick animals, hazardous materials, and/or infectious diseases, and distraught clients. Work in high traffic areas, confined or small spaces, noisy environment and tolerate unpleasant odors. Fluctuating meal periods; work schedule may not allow a set meal period time each day.
